“If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.” My dad introduced me to this quote early on in college when I was still trying to figure out my career path. I had always wanted to work for my dad’s company, but after volunteering in an orphanage in Peru, I realized that I wanted to make an impact.
I was nervous to tell my dad that I wanted to pursue Non-Profit Management instead of Business. In that conversation he told me about how his degree and first job are completely different than what he does now. He liked his job after college but it wasn’t his passion. He was interested in property management, bought an apartment building, quit his job, and the rest is history. He wished for me to be as excited to go to work in the morning as he is every day and to feel the same happiness he feels from realizing one’s passions in life. I found that happiness at RMHC last summer as an intern, and I knew I didn’t want it to end.
I jumped on the opportunity to join the RMHC team full time two months ago as the Community Engagement Coordinator. It’s a new position so my job duties develop more and more each week. I help support the volunteer program, manage volunteer groups and our Speaker’s Bureau program. I love how every day here is different and how most days I’m running around the House more than I’m sitting at my desk.
There have been so many moments at the House where I knew I was “doing what I love.” Recently, I was helping with our Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart at Children’s Hospital handing out giveaways to families. We were watching a child pick out his giveaway and we offered him an RMHC sticker. With a smile on his face, he proceeded to take the sticker and instead of putting it on his shirt, he stuck it to his head which was bald from treatment. Seeing our sticker on his head reminded me of the impact RMHC makes on these kids and their families. His happiness was contagious and I immediately felt it too. I now realize that this is the happiness my dad was talking about and I’m excited for all of the happy moments like this working at RMHC!
