In the early 1980s, a parent support group, McDonald’s Owner/Operators and a small team of dedicated volunteers set out to build a Ronald McDonald House® in Milwaukee. Previously, families had no place to stay while their seriously ill or injured children were being treated at Children’s Wisconsin and other area hospitals. The outpouring of support to build our House was remarkable, so much so that when we opened in 1984, we called it “The House that Love Built®.”
“In all honesty, I look [at the House as] something that became good out of bad. Every time I walk into this House that Love Built, I think of my daughter and how happy she would be to play in this house and romp around. To think that I’ve got nearly 55,000 people – families – that have come through this house…hopefully they feel as good as I do about the house that it is. It is a home.”

Due to our generous community of support, what started out as a 25-room House now boasts 84 private guest rooms, nine kitchens and common spaces for families to gather and play. We offer families from all 50 states and many countries around the world these amenities at little to no cost. A team of over 400 volunteers and a dedicated staff are always ready to do whatever it takes to make a family’s stay a little easier.
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we are grateful to you for helping us keep families together. We look forward to 40 more years!
