The Power of a Pop Tab

March 2nd, 2017

Hello everyone!

My name is Sophia Lococo and I am the new Community Outreach & Auction Coordinator for the Ronald McDonald House Charities Eastern Wisconsin. Before starting full-time in January, I interned for 6+ months at the House as the Special Events/Development Intern, and then joined the team part-time during my final semester of college at Marquette University. It was in this capacity where I first learned about our annual Tab Toss Day and the true meaning of, “a little goes a long way.”

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Tab Toss Day, it is a day when family and friends, schools, businesses, and organizations from all over come together to support the Ronald McDonald House and celebrate the power of a pop tab. Pop tabs are compact, with a high concentration of recyclable aluminum, so it couldn’t be easier! 100% of the revenue raised from recycling these pop tabs go directly to support the House.

Everyone knows what a little pop tab is, but does everyone know what it can do? This small piece of aluminum has given the House and the families that stay here stability during times of uncertainty.

It costs approximately $90 per night for a family to stay at the House- and with 70 rooms, open 24/7- 365 days out of the year- that can add up. We never turn anyone away for their inability to pay the suggested $20 per night donation. Our Pop Tab Program, along with many other programs and events we sponsor help make sure we can help keep families close to the services they need at a really stressful time.

Since the Pop Tab Program started in the year 2000, we have raised over a quarter of a million dollars- $331,000 to be exact- all of which has gone directly to the House. That money has provided thousands of families’ comfort and stability knowing they have a place to call home each and every night while their child is getting treatment at the hospital and it has enabled siblings and family members to stay close to their loved one when they need it most.

So next time you drink that soda or pick up that can, think of what collecting those little pop tabs mean, and how a little really does go a long way.
