Background Policy


The RMHC Background Policy is designed to minimize risk of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern WI community by establishing clear disqualification criteria and a process for disputing ineligibility. Based on guidelines from Ronald McDonald House Charities- Global and the Office of Administration for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the policy outlines specific offenses and conditions that may disqualify individuals from staying at the House, and a structured process for guests to dispute their ineligibility.

Background Screening:

  • RMHC conducts background screenings upon arrival for every visit.
  • RMHC may conduct further background screening for the following reasons:
    • If a RMHC House Policy violation occurs while on RMHC property.
    • Additional information is provided to RMHC regarding a guest/visitor.
    • Any concerning behavior exhibited, including but not limited to: acts of violence, threats, physical abuse, discrimination, harassment, bullying, combative or argumentative behavior, erratic actions, unresponsiveness, avoidance, hiding/evading, persistent noncompliance, behaviors related to drugs/alcohol, verbally inappropriate behavior toward staff, volunteers and/or other guests.
  • Any findings that pose a safety risk to guests, staff, or the organization may impact a family’s eligibility to stay at RMHC.
  • RMHC reserves the right to revoke or deny eligibility and/or access at any time for all visitors on RMHC property.

Disqualification Criteria:

  • Refusing a background screen.
  • Knowingly making a materially false statement in connection with the background screen.
  • Is registered, or is required to be registered, on the State or National Sex Offender Registry.
  • Has been convicted of a crime consisting of murder; child abuse or neglect; crime against children; partner abuse; crime involving rape or sexual assault; kidnapping; arson; physical assault.
  • Currently under investigation for any of the disqualifying crimes listed above. The ongoing investigation may pose a potential risk to the safety and integrity of the community at the House. The final eligibility determination will be made once the investigation is concluded.
  • All other offenses will be considered on an individualized basis.
  • RMHC reserves the right to revoke or deny eligibility and/or access at any time for all visitors on RMHC property.
